National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has paid tribute to former Cabinet Minister and long-serving politician Dalmas Otieno, describing him as a statesman whose legacy will endure in Kenya’s political history.
Speaking after attending a fundraiser in Migori on the invitation of Governor Ochillo Ayacko, Wetang’ula said Otieno’s intellect, eloquence, and dedication to service made him one of the most respected leaders of his time.
The event also brought together Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o and former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero, who joined efforts to support preparations for the farewell of the late leader.
Wetang’ula recalled first meeting Otieno in 1983 while serving as a young magistrate in Rongo.
From that encounter, he said, grew a lasting friendship built on mutual respect.
“He was a leader who left his community better than he found it,” Wetang’ula said, adding that Otieno embodied the qualities of a true servant of the people.
The Speaker noted that he had earlier informed the National Assembly of Otieno’s passing, prompting lawmakers to reflect on his contributions to the nation.
Members remembered him as an articulate debater with a warm personality and unwavering commitment to public service.
Otieno, who held various ministerial positions in past administrations, is remembered not only for his political career but also for championing development and mentorship in his home region.
Leaders and friends are now preparing for his burial, which will take place on 2nd October 2025.
Wetang’ula described the moment as a difficult one for the country, saying Kenya has lost a towering figure in both intellect and politics.
