A disturbing video has emerged showing Zaituni Kavaya, a 54-year-old domestic worker, descending the exterior of a Kilimani apartment building moments before her fatal fall. The footage captures her being briefly assisted by a man in a white shirt before she continues climbing down unaided. She eventually reaches the third floor, where she appears to struggle for support before falling.
Kavaya had been employed by a Sudanese family for laundry duties. The incident reportedly began after the family accused her of stealing KSh 5,000. She was allegedly called back to the apartment after finishing her chores, leading to a confrontation. The family claims she attempted to escape and fell from the balcony. (Kenya Times) However, her family disputes this version, demanding a thorough investigation.
A postmortem confirmed that Kavaya died from blunt force trauma. In response to her death, her family and domestic workers’ unions staged protests in Kilimani, demanding justice. Four members of the Sudanese family have been arrested and remain in custody as investigations continue.
This tragic incident has sparked widespread outrage and calls for accountability in the treatment of domestic workers in Kenya.
