Confusion continues to surround the fate of Kenyan police officer Benedict Kabiru, who vanished six months ago while on a peacekeeping mission in Haiti.
During a court hearing on Wednesday, the Attorney General’s office asked for more time to verify President William Ruto’s earlier remarks at the United Nations, where he paid tribute to Kabiru as one of the officers who had “died in the line of duty.”
However, government lawyers told Justice Chacha Mwita that Kabiru is still officially listed as “missing in action.” The contradiction between the President’s statement and the Attorney General’s position has left the officer’s family in deep distress.
Led by his mother Jacinta Wanjiku, the family petitioned the court demanding clear communication, formal confirmation of his fate, and an update on efforts to trace him. They argued that the government’s mixed messages have only prolonged their pain and denied them closure.
Justice Mwita allowed the family seven days to file a supplementary affidavit, with the Attorney General’s office given the same period to respond. He also urged both sides to seek dialogue to ease the family’s anguish.
Kabiru disappeared in March during an ambush by armed gangs in Port-au-Prince, raising fears over the safety of Kenyan officers serving abroad. His family has insisted that only the recovery of his remains and a dignified burial will bring them peace.
For now, Kabiru’s loved ones wait—torn between hope and grief—as official confirmation of his fate remains uncertain.
