Renowned lawyer Ndegwa Njiru has caused debate with his latest political analysis. He says the comeback of former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i is a well planned move to weaken the opposition ahead of the 2027 elections. Njiru shared his views in an interview with The Standard Digital on Thursday September 25, 2025.
The lawyer said Matiang’i is not simply chasing personal ambition but is part of a bigger plan. According to him, the Jubilee Party and its allies are using Matiang’i as a tool to divide the opposition. This, Njiru argues, could change the face of politics in Kenya in the coming years.
Njiru is well known for handling high profile impeachment cases. He has represented county assemblies in the removal of five governors and a deputy president. He was also part of cases involving Kawira Mwangaza and Mike Sonko. His past work on governance issues, such as the stalled Dandora Stadium project, gives him strong credibility in his analysis.
Matiang’i returned to Kenya on April 18, 2025, after a long stay in the United States. His arrival was low key, but it immediately set off talk about his possible run for the presidency. Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni and other allies have openly supported him. Many believe his entry will shake the position of veteran leaders like Raila Odinga.
Njiru says the timing of Matiang’i’s return is very important. With just over two years to the election, he believes the move is meant to dilute the opposition and weaken the Orange Democratic Movement. ODM has been the main force against ruling coalitions for years, and a split could benefit President William Ruto.
Kenya’s politics have been tense since the disputed 2022 elections and the 2024 protests. The protests pushed Ruto to bring opposition leaders into government. Njiru now believes Matiang’i could be part of a counter plan to secure Ruto’s hold on power by splitting votes.
His comments have stirred debate about the future of the opposition. Whether Matiang’i divides the movement or not, his return has already changed the political conversation.
