Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has unleashed a fiery reaction following the arrest of a 17–year–old suspect accused of disrespecting Kenya’s national flag.
According to a statement by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the suspect, identified as Ibrahim Haidar Yusuf, was taken into custody after being linked to an incident where the flag was allegedly insulted.
Reacting to the development, Sonko did not hold back. In a strongly worded tweet, he demanded harsh punishment for the teenager before deporting him. “Huyu kwanza afinywe vizuri kisha apewe direct ticket back to Kismayu. No one should ever disrespect our country like that,” Sonko wrote.
The former governor’s statement has since sparked heated debate online, with some Kenyans backing his tough stance while others condemned his remarks as extreme and discriminatory.
For Sonko, however, the matter is about national pride and respect for symbols of sovereignty. He insisted that no one, regardless of age, should be allowed to demean the Kenyan flag.
The incident has once again opened up a conversation on patriotism, youth conduct, and the boundaries of free expression, with Kenyans sharply divided on whether Sonko’s hardline approach is justified or excessive.
