The Barclays Women’s Super League table looks very different after a dramatic round of Sunday fixtures that saw Chelsea move clear at the top, Manchester United edge above Arsenal, and Brighton make a big leap up the standings.
At Leigh Sports Village, Manchester United and Arsenal played out a tense 0-0 draw in a clash that was high on intensity but short on cutting edge.
The Red Devils created the better chances in the first half, with Ella Toone and Nikita Parris going close, but the Gunners’ backline, marshalled by Leah Williamson, stood firm.
Arsenal had opportunities of their own, but United’s Mary Earps pulled off key saves to keep the game goalless.
The stalemate pushed United up to second with seven points, just ahead of Arsenal, who also sit on seven points but trail on goal difference.
Meanwhile, Chelsea showed their ruthless streak early at Kingsmeadow Park as Agnes Beaver Jones scored in the 7th minute to hand the champions a hard-fought 1-0 win over Leicester City.
Despite dominating possession, the Blues couldn’t find a second, but their solid defensive display ensured three crucial points.
Chelsea now sit comfortably at the summit with nine points from their opening fixtures, while Leicester slipped to eighth with three points.
The day’s other standout result came on the south coast, where Brighton hammered West Ham 4-1 in front of their home fans.
The Seagulls were clinical in attack, taking control early and never looking back.
The comprehensive victory lifted Brighton to sixth with four points, while West Ham’s struggles continued as they dropped to the foot of the table in 12th place with zero points.
After all Sunday games, the WSL table has Chelsea in first (9 points), Manchester United in second (7), Arsenal in third (7), and Brighton making strides in mid-table.
With the season still young, every point is proving vital in the race for the title and European qualification.
