Situation at Gusii Stadium right now is intense as thousands of Kisii residents have chosen to spend the night at the venue ahead of the Orange Democratic Movement’s 20th anniversary celebrations. Photos shared by Kisii Hot TV on X showed locals in large groups camping within and around the stadium. Many carried ODM flags and wore party colors, preparing for what they described as a historic moment.
The turnout comes after United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Majority Chief Whip Sylvanus Osoro issued both a warm welcome and a stern warning before the event. Earlier this week, the South Mugirango MP surprised many by extending an olive branch to Raila Odinga.
Known for his fiery style, Osoro posted on Facebook that it takes great wisdom and courage to hold a party together for two decades. He added that he looked forward to learning from Raila’s political journey.
In his message, Osoro mixed English with the local Gusii dialect, stressing that democracy must be respected. He assured residents that local political rivalries should not spoil the day. His words attracted huge reactions online as many interpreted his tone as rare unity in a region that has often been divided.
However, Osoro also cautioned against disruptions. He urged those planning to attend not to cause chaos, insisting that the anniversary should remain peaceful. Security agencies have since been placed on high alert, with Kisii leaders including Governor Simba Arati inspecting the venue to ensure safety.
The celebrations come months after Raila’s controversial remarks about former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, a popular ODM figure from Kisii. Raila had argued that Kisii votes alone could not secure the presidency, a statement that left many locals feeling sidelined. Although he later softened his position, the issue still lingers among residents.
Analysts believe Osoro’s latest move is strategic. His past confrontations with ODM leaders often ended in tensions, but this time he appears eager to show maturity. By welcoming Raila publicly while still standing firm for UDA, he has positioned himself as both a host and a protector of local interests.
As entertainment, fireworks, and speeches line up for tomorrow, excitement continues to build. For now, Kisii remains awake, and Gusii Stadium is already bursting with anticipation.
