Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi has said that President William Ruto and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) are driven by similar ideologies, adding that past disagreements between the two sides were mainly rooted in political rivalry rather than ideological differences.
During a media interview on Thursday, September 25, 2025, Wandayi explained that his criticism of Ruto in the past was simply because they belonged to opposing political camps. He emphasized that such rivalries often result in mutual criticism across political lines.
Wandayi stressed that now, being on the same political side, he has no difficulties working with President Ruto. He noted that while many expected tension, their collaboration has been smooth because of shared ideological beliefs.
The Cabinet Secretary highlighted that Ruto’s long political history ties back to ODM, pointing out that the President was among the party’s founding members. He argued this made Ruto’s ideologies naturally compatible with those of the ODM party.
According to Wandayi, it is therefore inaccurate to claim that he is working with a leader he never agreed with before. He said political competition had previously masked the ideological similarities that are now clearly visible.
Reflecting on his own journey, Wandayi admitted he never imagined serving in the Cabinet, even if Raila Odinga had become president in 2022. At the time, he was already holding significant responsibilities as a Member of Parliament.
He explained that being a Minority Leader in Parliament would have made it extremely difficult for him to take up a Cabinet position, which is why the idea of ever becoming a minister had never crossed his mind.
Wandayi further said he never expected President Ruto to open his government to ODM members or leaders from outside Kenya Kwanza. He termed his appointment and inclusion of opposition figures as an outcome only possible through God’s plans.
The Energy CS concluded that his current position was unexpected but appreciated, adding that political rivalries often overshadow deeper ideological similarities. He expressed confidence that shared principles with President Ruto will continue to guide their cooperation moving forward.
