A man was killed by an angry mob on Thursday, September 25, in Samutet village, Kericho County, after he allegedly hacked his mother, a child, and his sister-in-law to death in a shocking incident that left the entire community in mourning.
The killings, which occurred earlier in the day, triggered immediate outrage among residents who responded by beating the man mercilessly, leaving him for dead before authorities could intervene.
According to witnesses, the man attacked the three victims in their homestead using a machete, killing them on the spot. Villagers, alerted by the screams, rushed to the scene and apprehended him before unleashing mob justice.
The motive behind the gruesome killings remains unclear, with locals and family members expressing shock over what could have driven the man to commit such an atrocity.
Police officers arrived at the scene after the suspect had already succumbed to injuries inflicted by the mob. They managed to disperse the angry crowd, secure the scene, and remove the bodies for transfer to the Kericho County Hospital mortuary.
Authorities have launched investigations into the incident to establish what may have triggered the man’s actions, with preliminary findings expected in the coming days.
Kericho County police commander urged residents to refrain from taking the law into their own hands, emphasising the importance of letting security agencies handle criminal cases.
“While we understand the anger and pain this community is feeling, mob justice is illegal and denies investigators the chance to get to the bottom of such tragedies,” he stated.
The triple murder and subsequent lynching have sparked fresh debate over mental health awareness, domestic conflict prevention, and the need for timely intervention to prevent violent family tragedies.
