Nairobi / Mombasa, Kenya — Mary Njeri, wife of the late Simon Warui, has voiced anger and suspicion following her husband’s death in police custody in Mombasa after he was reported missing in Nairobi. The family says the official explanations don’t add up.
Warui was reported missing from Umoja I Estate, Nairobi, with his disappearance registered at Kamukunji Police Station. Three days later, his family was informed he had been booked into Mombasa Central Police Station. His body was later found in custody on September 17, 2025.
Speaking at a press conference, Mary questioned how Warui wound up in Mombasa and raised doubts about the nature of his injuries, which included trauma to the neck, head and hands. She rejected claims that he died from natural causes or from a fall.
“If it is indeed he committed suicide as they suggest, then he would have done so in Nairobi or his home area, why Mombasa?” she challenged.
The family alleges there is a brutal cover-up. They are demanding full clarity on the chain of custody, the CCTV footage, and why no family member was allowed to visit or receive updates.
A post-mortem report cited cardiorespiratory collapse due to a fractured and dislocated neck, calling the pattern of injuries “consistent with a fall from height.” The family disputes this, calling the report incomplete and possibly influenced.
Human rights groups now demand that officers on duty, including the OCS of Mombasa Central, be suspended to allow for an independent investigation. The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has confirmed it is probing the incident and has acquired CCTV footage from the station.
