President William Ruto has sharply disagreed with United States President Donald Trump’s dismissal of climate change during the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Trump had used his speech to claim that climate change was nothing more than a global trick, accusing international organisations of misleading the world. He said climate warnings were exaggerated and based on false predictions.
Ruto, however, gave a strong response in a media interview shortly after Trump’s remarks. He said the effects of climate change could not be denied, pointing to frequent floods, long droughts, and destructive wildfires across different regions of the world. According to him, these events prove that climate disruption is real and requires urgent action.
The Kenyan leader stressed that no amount of denial could erase the visible damage being caused to communities, especially in developing nations. He noted that science had already confirmed the rise in global temperatures and unpredictable weather, which are harming millions of people.
Ruto also explained that Africa was shifting from depending on aid to designing its own solutions. He said the continent was presenting climate action as an investment opportunity, with governments putting forward proposals that would attract financing while helping reduce the crisis. He expressed confidence that this approach would help Africa grow stronger even as it faces the effects of climate change.
Beyond climate issues, Ruto used the UN platform to call for sweeping reforms within the international body. He argued that the current structure of the UN was outdated and failed to reflect modern global realities. He warned that without change, the organisation risked losing relevance and collapsing under its own weight.
