
Law enforcement officers in Mumias East have arrested two suspects believed to be behind a series of sophisticated M-Pesa fraud schemes in the area.The suspects, identified as 30-year-old Jonathan Ambwaya Kwini and his 23-year-old accomplice Timothy Siloche Wesonga, were apprehended during an intelligence-led operation in Bomani Teachers’ Estate, Mumias town.
Authorities acted on vital tips that guided them to the location, where they made a significant recovery of equipment and documents used in the fraudulent operations.
Among the items seized was a Safaricom Mobicom phone, reportedly used for registering SIM cards, alongside four Itel phones, 70 Airtel SIM cards, 24 Telkom SIM cards, and over 5,000 Safaricom SIM cards.
In addition to the mobile devices, police recovered 142 national ID cards belonging to various individuals, highlighting the scale and sophistication of the suspected scam.
Officials say the haul points to a highly organized network operating in the region.
Following the raid, both Kwini and Wesonga were escorted to Kakamega police station, along with the confiscated evidence.They are expected to join other suspects already in custody and are scheduled to appear in court on Monday, where authorities will seek, pursue charges.
