Kajiado residents were left in shock after a dramatic incident unfolded at a political rally involving Governor Joseph Ole Lenku’s helicopter pilot.
A viral video shows the pilot of the chopper, registration 5Y-DSB, angrily chasing away a group of young men who had surrounded the aircraft shortly after it landed. The situation escalated when the pilot slapped a man who had perched on the helicopter’s landing skids, sparking murmurs in the crowd.
Witnesses said the pilot, visibly agitated, went on to confront another youth who was busy taking photos next to the helicopter. Within moments, the group scattered, leaving behind a tense atmosphere.
The incident has since ignited heated debate online. Some Kenyans defended the pilot, arguing that his actions were driven by genuine safety concerns. “Those boys pia wamekosea, ndege si mchezo bwana,” wrote one user, warning that helicopters are not toys. Others criticized the pilot’s conduct, claiming his aggression undermined his professionalism.
Kajiado County Communications Director Paul Tobiko weighed in, backing the pilot’s stance. He stressed that helicopters pose serious risks when mishandled by crowds. “We have seen people lose their lives after clinging onto helicopters during takeoff. The pilot was right to act firmly to prevent a disaster,” Tobiko noted.
This is not the first time Kenyans have flirted with danger around aircraft. Earlier this year, a man in Migori shocked guests at a traditional wedding when he clung onto a chopper mid-takeoff, risking his life and that of passengers.
As investigations continue, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the thin line between curiosity and catastrophe whenever Kenyans gather around helicopters at public events.
