People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua has officially declared that she will run for the presidency in the 2027 General Election. But unlike many politicians who fight to stay in power for as long as possible, Karua has promised that if she wins, she will serve only one term.
Speaking during her party’s National Delegates Conference (NDC) on Friday, Karua made it clear that her decision was not about personal ambition or power, but about service to Kenyans and restoring trust in leadership.
“We make this declaration not out of mere ambition for office, but out of devotion to service,” she said.
Karua explained that her main goal is to lay a strong foundation for Kenya’s future within five years. She admitted that no single leader can completely solve all the country’s problems, but believed one term is enough to set things in the right direction.
“Nobody will ever finish the job of making Kenya prosperous. You lay a foundation and wait for the next team to continue. That is why I’ll be seeking only one term,” she added.
She further argued that her one-term promise is also a way of “demystifying power” in Kenya and Africa, where many leaders cling to office for decades.
“People get to power and they refuse to leave. Martha Karua, yours truly, is seeking a single term, one term,” she boldly declared.
Karua announced that the opposition will soon launch the “One People, One Purpose, One Term” movement. The campaign will focus on uniting Kenyans around values like justice, accountability, and integrity.
Her pledge now sets the stage for a major political battle within the opposition, especially after DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua also confirmed he will be running for president in 2027.
Karua ended her speech with a passionate call to Kenyans:
“Kenyans are hurting, and Kenyans deserve better. We shall not walk this road alone.”
