Confusion has engulfed Kenyans after a new video emerged showing Somali teenagers allegedly involved in desecrating the national flag, sparking questions about whether they were ever arrested.
The two boys, initially filmed mocking the Kenyan flag during a football match at Nyayo Stadium, appear in the latest clip proudly displaying their passports, raising doubts about the authorities’ earlier statements.
On Thursday, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed that a 17-year-old suspect had been detained, identifying him as one of those captured on camera during the Mogadishu City Club versus Police FC clash.
Investigators said they were still working to trace his accomplice, believed to remain in the country.
The release of the second video has fueled public skepticism, with many questioning the credibility of the initial reports and accusing officials of misleading the nation.
Social media users have reacted strongly, demanding clarification on the suspects’ whereabouts and whether justice is being served.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen had earlier directed that the teenagers be arrested, prosecuted, and deported, while Somalia’s Ambassador to Kenya, Jabril Ibrahim Abdulle, condemned the act as disgraceful.
Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja also underscored the need to respect the national flag, warning that no one would be allowed to undermine Kenya’s symbols of unity.
