Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has reported an allegedly doctored video in which he criticizes former Prime Minister and party leader Raila Odinga.
The MP took to social media on Saturday evening to publish a longer version of the video, saying that his political opponents had manipulated it to promote a false narrative.
According to the MP, the video was taken at a rally in Suna East Constituency in 2024, during Raila’s bid for the AU Chairperson seat.
In the doctored film, elements of the original tape appeared to have been stitched together, with Owino’s statements regarding President William Ruto edited to appear as if they were intended for Raila.
The film was taken at the height of Raila’s candidacy for the African Union (AU) chairperson in 2024.
In his real address, Owino urged Raila to continue fighting for Kenyans’ rights, particularly against high levies on essential products.
“Baba, before you go to AU, please organise one more protest so we finish this man (Ruto),” pleaded Owino. In the doctored video, however, all of the critical comments intended for Ruto were spliced to appear as Raila’s, despite the fact that Owino is a staunch Raila fan.
Owino has remained opposed to the Kenya Kwanza administration despite the signing of a 10-point agenda Memorandum of Understanding in which the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), committed to working with the long-serving opposition Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) for the benefit of all Kenyans.
Despite their opposing views on the current government, he has yet to make any derogatory statements against his party’s leader.
