Several students and teachers were injured on Saturday after a school bus rolled at Mutwamwaki Ridge along the Kivandini-Masinga Road in Machakos County.
The bus, which was carrying 48 students and three teachers from St. Augustine Mumbuni Secondary School, was returning from an educational trip to Masinga Dam when the accident occurred.
According to witnesses, the brakes of the bus are believed to have failed, causing the vehicle to lose control before veering off the road and overturning. The impact left many passengers with injuries, some serious, prompting an immediate rescue operation by locals and motorists.
Emergency responders, including police officers and medics, rushed to the scene. The injured students and teachers were quickly evacuated and taken to Masinga Level Four Hospital and other nearby facilities for treatment. Authorities have since confirmed that no fatalities were reported, but several victims are under close medical observation.
The accident caused panic among parents and the local community, many of whom rushed to the hospital upon hearing news of the incident. School officials assured parents that efforts were underway to ensure all the affected students received the necessary medical care.
Machakos County Police Commander appealed for calm, noting that investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing. He urged schools and transport operators to ensure regular inspection and maintenance of buses to avoid similar tragedies.
The incident has once again raised concerns about road safety, especially for school transport, with calls for stricter enforcement of vehicle inspection standards across the country.
