Homa Bay Town Member of Parliament (MP) Peter Kaluma has downplayed Martha Karua’s 2027 presidential ambitions, insisting that her bid is bound to collapse without the support of ODM leader Raila Odinga.
Kaluma’s remarks came just a day after the People’s Liberation Party (PLP) unveiled Karua as its presidential flag bearer during the party’s National Delegates Conference held at Ufungamano House on Friday, September 26, 2025.
Despite the declaration, Kaluma argued that the PLP chief stands no chance of ascending to the presidency without Raila’s political blessing. He pointed out that Karua had previously teamed up with the former Prime Minister in the 2022 general election under the Azimio la Umoja ticket, but the duo still lost to William Ruto’s UDA.
“You are going nowhere without Baba Raila Odinga! Search for Kalonzo and tell him the same,” Kaluma stated in a post on his official X page on Saturday, September 27.
The legislator further urged Karua and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka to rally behind Raila, whom he described as deeply entrenched in the current political landscape, noting that any opposition alliance without him would be ineffective.
Kaluma’s sentiments add to the growing debate over opposition unity as the 2027 presidential race begins to take shape, with questions lingering over whether Karua, Kalonzo, and other leaders can mount a formidable challenge to President William Ruto without Raila’s hand in the game.
