Former Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu has faulted the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) for what he termed as misplaced accusations against older political outfits in the Mt Kenya region.
In a statement shared on his social media pages on Saturday, September 27, 2025, Wambugu dismissed claims that established parties are to blame for disunity in the vote-rich region. He argued that the DCP, which is closely associated with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, has no moral authority to make such allegations given its short existence.
“The new party keeps accusing older parties of dividing Mt Kenya votes. But do they not see themselves as part of the same problem? They only came up six months ago,” Wambugu posed.
The former lawmaker went further to remind DCP that before its formation, the parties it is now accusing were the ones holding the votes that Gachagua constantly boasts about. He maintained that it is, in fact, the entry of the new party that triggered the current split in the region’s political base.
“Where do they think the ‘united’ votes were before they came? It is their own entry that scattered the unity they keep lamenting about,” he added.
Wambugu’s remarks add to the growing debate within Mt Kenya politics as parties jostle for dominance ahead of 2027. His criticism of DCP underscores the battle between emerging outfits and long-established parties that continue to shape the region’s political realignments.
