A dramatic incident unfolded at Jogoo Police Station in Nairobi after a police officer, reportedly intoxicated, threatened to kill his superior before shooting a colleague. The officer, identified as Daniel Lokidongoi, now faces serious charges of causing grievous harm to a fellow officer, Constable Cliff Nyanumba.
The confrontation occurred on September 4, 2025, after Lokidongoi had been assigned alongside two colleagues to supervise a demolition exercise at Uhuru Market. For the operation, he had been issued an AK-47 rifle loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition. Later that evening, after allegedly consuming alcohol, Lokidongoi is said to have confronted a shopkeeper at gunpoint, demanding money. The terrified shopkeeper managed to escape unharmed and immediately rushed to Jogoo Police Station to file a report.
Upon receiving the complaint, the Officer Commanding Station (OCS), Chief Inspector Caroline Njuguna, summoned Lokidongoi. He arrived at the station visibly drunk and, in a shocking turn of events, began issuing threats against her while also attempting to turn the weapon on himself. Fearing escalation, the OCS called for reinforcements.
Several officers, including Constable Nyanumba, approached Lokidongoi in an effort to disarm him at the station’s crime office. During the ensuing struggle, a shot was fired, striking Nyanumba in the hand and grazing the back of his head. He was quickly rushed to Komarock Hospital, where he received emergency medical treatment.
Lokidongoi was eventually overpowered, disarmed, and arrested. Investigators later recovered the AK-47 rifle, a spent cartridge, and two bullet heads from the scene as evidence. The incident sparked concern over alcohol use among armed officers and the potential risks it poses to both colleagues and civilians.
Lokidongoi was arraigned before Chief Magistrate Kennedy Bidali at the Makadara Law Courts, where he was formally charged. The magistrate released him on a bond of KSh 200,000 as investigations continue. The case is scheduled for mention on October 9, 2025.
Authorities have since pledged to conduct thorough investigations to establish the circumstances leading to the officer’s reckless actions and ensure accountability within the service.
