The Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) has unveiled a new scholarship program targeting residents of Turkana County and refugees living in Kakuma and Kalobeyei camps, designed to boost careers in community health nursing.
The initiative, announced Monday, is a collaborative effort between KMTC, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and the Turkana County Government.
The program will provide full tuition for an Upgrading Diploma in Community Health Nursing through a distance learning model at KMTC’s Lodwar campus, with classes set to start in September 2025.
“This scholarship is aimed at strengthening the capacity of the local community in Turkana and the refugee population in Kakuma and Kalobeyei,” KMTC stated. “UNHCR will fully fund tuition for successful applicants who meet the set criteria.”
To apply, Turkana residents are required to submit a recommendation letter from their local chief, while refugee candidates must obtain an introduction letter from a UNHCR officer.
The scholarship program is part of KMTC’s ongoing efforts to increase access to healthcare education for underserved communities and support professional development in the health sector.
By targeting both local and refugee populations, the college aims to cultivate a new generation of skilled community health nurses capable of addressing healthcare challenges in marginalized regions.
Successful applicants will gain the opportunity to pursue professional qualifications while contributing to the improvement of public health services across Turkana County and refugee settlements.
