The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has announced plans to auction properties worth Sh505 million linked to former Migori Governor Okoth Obado.
The prime assets, situated in Nairobi, Kisumu, and Migori, will be sold in a public auction as part of efforts to recover proceeds of corruption.
According to EACC, the properties were allegedly acquired through irregularly awarded county tenders during Obado’s tenure.
Investigations revealed that millions of shillings were siphoned from Migori County’s coffers through proxy companies connected to close associates and family members.
The Commission successfully obtained court orders to seize the properties after establishing a strong link between the illicit funds and the assets in question.
In Nairobi, the high-value properties include luxury residential apartments and commercial developments in upscale neighborhoods.
These are expected to draw keen interest from real estate investors and private buyers, given the capital’s surging demand for prime property.
In Kisumu, Obado’s properties under the hammer feature residential homes and parcels of land within rapidly growing urban estates.
With Kisumu emerging as a regional commercial hub, auctioneers anticipate stiff competition among bidders.
Meanwhile in Migori, the auction list includes expansive residential homes and agricultural land.
Given Migori’s growing strategic importance in cross-border trade with Tanzania, analysts believe these assets will attract both local and regional buyers.
The planned auction underscores EACC’s intensified crackdown on corruption and recovery of public resources.
In a statement, the Commission reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that no one benefits from wealth obtained through illegal means, warning that public officers found guilty of graft will continue to lose ill-gotten assets.
Potential buyers have been urged to conduct proper due diligence and familiarize themselves with auction terms ahead of the sale.
The hammer is expected to fall soon, marking a significant step in Kenya’s anti-corruption drive.
