Landlord entered an abandoned residence and detected a strange odor, leading to a surprising discovery inside a closet.
Authorities discovered additional remains in the storage facilities, escalating an already gloomy probe into the former tenant’s background.
The suspect allegedly disclosed unsettling details with police, suggesting a pattern of concealment after many unaided births over several years.
The investigation began on September 13, when Jessica Mauthe’s previous landlord, Brent Flanigan, entered the home to clean after evicting her in August due to nonpayment.
He noticed a strong odor emanating from a rubbish bag in a closet, where he discovered the remains of a baby, and promptly called police.
A later check of the house revealed two more newborn remains in rubbish bags kept in the storage room. Days later, on September 18, Pennsylvania State Police announced the discovery of a fourth set of remains, bringing the total to four.
According to a criminal complaint acquired by CBS News, Mauthe admitted to concealing the bodies of three infants shortly after giving birth at home.
She related one birth that happened in the restroom around six years ago, claiming that she heard the baby moan before passing out.
She awoke to find the infant unresponsive and concealed the body. She also informed police that two more infants died shortly after birth, one of which was allegedly wrapped in a towel and left until it stopped making noises. Mauthe apparently did not seek medical attention or alert anybody about the births.
