Litein Boys High School has been shut down indefinitely following a violent student riot sparked by the administration’s decision to block learners from watching a highly anticipated English Premier League match between Arsenal and Manchester City on Sunday night.
The unrest, which escalated into arson and destruction of school property, left dormitories and classrooms engulfed in smoke, with damages estimated in the millions. Videos and images circulating online show charred buildings and debris strewn across the compound, painting a grim picture of the aftermath.
According to sources within the school, students had requested to watch the 90-minute match as part of their weekend entertainment, a tradition observed in many boys’ boarding schools. However, the administration declined the request, triggering outrage among the learners.
The situation quickly spiraled into chaos. Students reportedly switched off all lights in the compound, overpowering security personnel and police officers, and carried out the destruction under the cover of darkness.
This is not the first time Litein Boys has faced student unrest. In July 2025, the school was rocked by another rampage, this time over undercooked rice served during dinner. That incident also led to property damage and police intervention.
In May 2023, the school was closed indefinitely after students rioted for reasons that remain unclear.
During that episode, biometric systems, window panes, and vehicles were vandalized, raising concerns about the institution’s ability to manage student discipline and mental health.
Education officials, school administrators, and security teams have launched investigations into the latest incident. The Ministry of Education is expected to issue a formal statement on the school’s reopening timeline and disciplinary measures.
The recurring unrest at Litein Boys High School has reignited debate over student welfare, leadership accountability, and the role of extracurricular activities in maintaining school harmony.
