The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has ordered the closure of 107 hotels, bars, and entertainment joints across the country for flouting noise pollution regulations.
The list includes the popular Quiver Lounge in Eastlands, Nairobi, which has now been forced to shut its doors pending compliance.
In a public notice dated September 22, 2025, NEMA said the action was triggered by a surge in noise-related complaints from residents, especially in Nairobi and Mombasa.
According to the regulator, such complaints have increased by 15 percent in the past year.
The directive is anchored on the Environmental Management and Coordination (Noise and Excessive Vibration Pollution) Control Regulations, 2009.
“Facilities have seven days to obtain the necessary licenses or risk complete shutdown. This move follows persistent concerns over excessive noise disrupting communities,” the authority stated.
Among other entertainment spots listed are Jambo Lounge, Havana Lounge along the Northern Bypass, and Cool Breeze Bar in Ruiru.
Several hotels and eateries have also been flagged, including Clarion Hotel in Westlands and Eclipse Lounge at Tatu City, Kiambu.
The crackdown comes ahead of World Cleanup Day 2025, with NEMA intensifying campaigns against environmental hazards such as noise and textile waste.
Facility owners have been directed to submit compliance documentation at NEMA’s Nairobi headquarters within the set timeframe. Failure to comply will attract enforcement action, including closure of premises.
The move signals a tougher stance by the government on nightlife venues and hospitality establishments.
