A fresh online opinion poll has ignited debate over Kenya’s 2027 presidential race after placing former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i at the top of the list.
The survey, conducted on X by political analyst Ndwaru Senior, drew close to 3,000 participants.
According to the results, Matiang’i secured 40.7 percent of the votes, President William Ruto followed with 26.4 percent, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka polled at 21.2 percent, while former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua came in fourth with 11.7 percent.
Although the poll was not scientific, it reflects shifting perceptions among Kenyans and points to Matiang’i’s growing political influence.
His strong performance has added new energy to discussions within the opposition, where leaders are weighing the possibility of fielding a joint candidate in 2027.
In recent weeks, names such as Kalonzo, Gachagua, and Matiang’i have been floated as potential flagbearers.
Political history has shown that alliances often decide the outcome of Kenyan elections, making coalition-building one of the most critical factors as the next polls draw nearer.
For Ruto, the results are a reminder of the challenges ahead. While he retains a solid base of support, his administration’s performance in the coming years will heavily shape his re-election chances.
For the opposition, the real test lies in whether leaders can put aside personal ambitions and rally behind one candidate with broad national appeal.
The online poll may not determine the eventual winner, but it provides a window into the public mood. With 2027 approaching, the battle lines are becoming clearer, and the question remains whether unity or division will define the opposition’s strategy.
