Tension has gripped Litein Boys High School in Kericho County after the school was closed indefinitely following a violent students’ riot.
The chaos broke out late Sunday night after a heated argument among students over an English Premier League football match between Manchester United and Chelsea.
According to sources from the school, a group of students had gathered in the school hall to watch the much-anticipated match.
What started as a normal evening of entertainment quickly turned chaotic after a disagreement between two groups of fans.
Witnesses say the argument turned into a physical fight when one group of students allegedly mocked the losing side, provoking anger and retaliation.
Soon, the situation escalated into a full-blown riot. Some students are said to have destroyed school property, including chairs, tables, and windows.
Others lit small fires within the school compound, forcing teachers and security officers to call for reinforcement from local police.
Kericho County education officials who visited the school on Monday morning confirmed the closure.
The Sub-County Director of Education said the decision to close the school was made to prevent further damage and ensure the safety of both students and staff.
Parents have been asked to come and pick up their children as investigations continue. “We cannot risk the lives of our learners and teachers.
The school board will meet to assess the damage and discuss when learning can resume,” said the official.
Several students have reportedly been injured in the scuffle, although no fatalities have been confirmed.
Those injured were taken to nearby health facilities for treatment.
Police have launched investigations to identify the students who were behind the destruction of school property.
Authorities have warned that anyone found culpable will face disciplinary action and possible criminal charges.
