Former Nyeri Town Member of Parliament, Ngunjiri Wambugu, has made explosive allegations against former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, accusing him of inciting residents in Mathira to storm a hotel owned by the widow of Gachagua’s late brother.
In a strongly worded statement issued on Sunday, Wambugu claimed that Gachagua has been deliberately misleading locals with false information that money from President William Ruto would be distributed at the establishment. He alleged that this was a tactic designed to create tension and endanger the privately-owned property.
“I hear Gachagua claims money from Ruto will be shared in a hotel in Mathira tomorrow and has incited people to go and get it. The saddest thing is that the hotel he wants invaded belongs to the widow of his late brother,” Wambugu stated.
The former lawmaker condemned the alleged move, describing it as “politics at its ugliest.” He argued that dragging a private family business, especially one belonging to a bereaved relative, into a political conflict is not only reckless but also deeply disrespectful to the deceased’s memory.
Wambugu accused Gachagua of manipulating vulnerable citizens by weaponising poverty with false promises of handouts. He stressed that such actions risk undermining peace and security in the area.
“Leaders must not mislead citizens to invade businesses that sustain families. That hotel is a livelihood for a widow, her children, and employees who depend on it,” he added.
These allegations have sparked heated debate in Nyeri and across the greater Mt. Kenya region, where political tensions between factions allied with President Ruto and those loyal to Gachagua continue to intensify.
Wambugu’s claims have raised concerns over the safety of private property and the potential for politically driven unrest in the region.
He has called on security agencies to act swiftly to protect the hotel from a potential invasion, placing full responsibility for any resulting damage on Gachagua.
