Tension and sadness gripped Emanwa location in Nyamache, Kisii County, after a shocking case of violence turned into tragedy. Villagers lynched a 32-year-old man, Enock Obwaya, after he allegedly killed his own father, 80-year-old James Ongige Obwaya, during a domestic fight.
The incident happened on Saturday, September 20, 2025. According to police and eyewitnesses, Enock attacked his father with a club after the two quarreled at their homestead. The old man’s wife tried to stop the fight, but she was unable to save her husband. Enock continued hitting his father until he collapsed with serious head injuries.
Neighbours heard the screams and came out to help. They tried to rush the injured man to the hospital. However, Enock armed himself with a panga and threatened anyone who came close. Out of fear, the villagers left the elderly man lying near the gate, bleeding. Sadly, he died during the night from his injuries.
When villagers found out the next morning that James had died, they were furious. They quickly organised a manhunt for Enock, who was trying to escape to a nearby village. The angry mob caught up with him, beat him to death, and later set his body on fire.
Police officers later arrived at the scene and took both bodies to the mortuary for post-mortem examinations.
Investigations revealed that Enock had just been released from custody two days earlier, on September 18, 2025. He had been facing assault charges in Ogembo Law Courts, and his father, James, was a key witness in the case. Police believe this was the main reason behind the fatal attack.
Residents said the family had a long history of disputes, and Enock had shown signs of anger and bitterness after his release from jail.
Authorities have raised concerns over the growing cases of family violence and mob justice in Kisii and nearby counties. Many of these cases are linked to land rows, domestic fights, and long-running grudges.
