It has been over two months since teacher and blogger Albert Ojwang died in police custody, yet the pain of his loss is still fresh for his family.
Ojwang, who passed away in June just weeks before his 32nd birthday, left behind his wife, Nevnina Onyango, and their three-year-old son. His family says they are still waiting for justice, as six suspects remain in remand but are yet to face trial.
On August 17, as Manchester United kicked off their new season at Old Trafford, Nevnina shared an emotional post online. She wrote, “Alberto, wake up, Manchester United is playing,” a message that stirred deep emotions among Kenyans.
Ojwang was a passionate Manchester United fan, and during his burial in Homa Bay County on July 4, his casket was draped in both the club’s flag and the Kenyan national flag. Mourners also turned up in jerseys to honor his love for the team.
The late blogger’s funeral had been a tearful affair. His mother recalled how she struggled with menial jobs, including selling charcoal, just to educate him. Heartbroken, she said she hoped her son’s killers would face justice.

Nevnina, too, has continued to express her grief publicly. She revealed they met in Kisumu through a mutual friend in 2021, fell in love, and married in April this year—just two months before his death. On July 7, she celebrated what would have been his 32nd birthday with another touching tribute.
Many Kenyans have since joined the family in mourning, sending comforting words to the widow and urging her to stay strong. For Albert’s loved ones, the memories remain alive, and the call for justice continues.
