Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua has stirred the political waters after openly declaring that she is working tirelessly to become the opposition’s presidential candidate in the upcoming 2027 elections.
Her announcement comes barely a day after former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua dominated headlines with a heated interview on Inooro TV, where he took aim at President William Ruto’s administration.
Karua made her remarks during a media engagement, details of which can be followed here. She described her mission as one rooted in accountability and integrity, pledging to rally Kenyans behind a leadership style that prioritizes service over personal gain.
Her move signals a fresh round of political re-alignments within the opposition. With ODM boss Raila Odinga increasingly tied to the broad-based government partnership with Ruto, Karua’s bold step is being read as an attempt to fill the vacuum of a strong, independent opposition voice. Analysts argue that her persistence could either unite the opposition or spark a scramble for dominance among key figures.
Karua, who was Raila Odinga’s running mate in 2022, now faces the challenge of mobilizing support from regions that have historically leaned towards established heavyweights. Her emphasis on clean leadership and gender inclusion could, however, resonate strongly with younger voters and women who have long felt sidelined in high-level politics.
Political observers also note that Karua’s timing is strategic. With Gachagua rebranding himself as a defender of Mt. Kenya interests and other leaders like Wiper’s Kalonzo Musyoka eyeing a central role, the competition for the opposition flag is set to intensify. By going public early, Karua positions herself as a serious contender unwilling to play second fiddle again.
Whether her candidacy gains momentum will depend on her ability to stitch together coalitions across regions and fend off rivals already consolidating their bases. One thing is clear, Karua has entered the 2027 conversation with clarity and determination, setting the stage for high-stakes battles in the opposition camp.
