Senator Joe Nyutu has stirred a debate after alleging that President William Ruto’s administration is attempting to centralize the management of public resources for political leverage.
Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV’s Day Break show on Monday, the Murang’a Senator claimed that the President prefers to have direct control over every shilling of public money to ensure loyalty from those who benefit from government projects.
“President Ruto would want to control every cent so that those who benefit from any public resource benefit directly from him on condition that they support him,” Nyutu remarked, suggesting that this approach risks politicizing development.
His remarks have reignited the conversation on the balance between devolution and centralized governance, with critics warning that such a system could undermine county governments and the principles of equitable resource distribution.
Nyutu’s statement appears to echo concerns raised by sections of the opposition who have accused the Kenya Kwanza government of using development projects as political bargaining tools ahead of the 2027 general elections.
However, leaders allied to the President have dismissed the claims, insisting that Ruto’s government is focused on streamlining public spending, fighting wastage, and ensuring that funds reach their intended beneficiaries.
They argue that tighter control of resources is part of the administration’s agenda to fight corruption and enhance transparency.
Analysts say Nyutu’s comments could deepen divisions within the political class, particularly as the country gears up for an intense election cycle.
The debate is expected to continue in parliament, with lawmakers likely to seek clarity on how national government projects are being funded and distributed across the country.
For now, Kenyans will be watching closely as the discussion around resource control shapes the political narrative in the months ahead.
