Mwingi Central MP Gideon Mulyungi has expressed confidence that the United Opposition will produce Kenya’s next president, citing the historical alliance between the Kamba and Mt. Kenya regions.
Speaking at Calvary Christian Church in Mutituni, Machakos County, on Saturday, September 20, Mulyungi stressed the importance of Mt. Kenya’s support in presidential contests. “No candidate has ever won the presidency without the backing of the mountain,” he said, adding that the current unity between the two regions marks a decisive shift in the country’s politics.
The legislator defended opposition leaders Rigathi Gachagua and Kalonzo Musyoka against critics who have questioned their appearances.
“I’ve heard our opponents say that former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua has an unappealing face and is unfit to lead. But I say this face of Riggy G is the face of God. Get used to it. Even if you think Kalonzo has a bad face, get used to it—he could be the next president,” Mulyungi remarked.
He called on religious leaders to pray for opposition figures, saying they hold the key to breaking what he described as cartel governance.
His comments come amid speculation that Kalonzo might align with the Kenya Kwanza coalition ahead of the 2027 General Election. At the same time, Gachagua has consistently declared his intention to challenge President William Ruto, presenting himself as the most viable candidate to unseat the incumbent.
The United Opposition has maintained that its priority is to stop Ruto from winning a second term. According to Gachagua, the coalition will vet all presidential aspirants, with the chosen candidate expected to be unveiled in December 2026.
