Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi has fired back at former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua over claims that President William Ruto was dishing out millions at a Karatina hotel.
The fierce exchange erupted after Gachagua appeared on Inooro TV’s Kiririmbi Show where he accused Ruto of using Ksh 10 million to buy loyalty in Mathira. He claimed the money was to be shared among Ruto allies at Triple Dreams Gardens Hotel.
Wamumbi responded on X with a fiery post that went viral within hours. He said the hotel belonged to Gachagua’s late brother’s wife and asked how heartless he could be to target it. He denied any cash payouts and insisted that government resources were being used for development projects.
The MP warned that Gachagua’s remarks were dangerous and could harm innocent staff at the hotel. He compared the attack to a past incident in Sagana where another hotel allegedly came under threat after similar claims by Gachagua.
Wamumbi also reminded residents that during Gachagua’s time in government, hotels and restaurants in Nyeri suffered long closures under strict COVID-19 rules. He said his own intervention in Parliament had helped reopen them, and he accused Gachagua of having no concern for local businesses.
His post carried a sting of sarcasm as he told residents in Kikuyu that no meeting was taking place at the venue and anyone expecting money should instead wait for “American dollars.”
The clash comes at a time when Mt Kenya politics is heating up. Once a stronghold for Ruto, the region now shows deep cracks as Gachagua rallies support under his Democratic Congress Party. He has accused Ruto of sidelining Mt Kenya leaders and favoring others like Interior CS Kithure Kindiki.
Political observers say such confrontations could split the community further and revive old rivalries. They warn that continued accusations of handouts and betrayal may inflame emotions and stir unrest as the 2027 election race builds up.
By Monday morning, no trouble was reported at Triple Dreams Gardens. The venue, popular for weddings and conferences, remained peaceful as leaders traded barbs online.
