Kiprono Cheburet has secured the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket for the upcoming Baringo senatorial by-election after defeating eight rivals in the party’s nomination exercise.
According to results released by the party, Cheburet garnered 48,791 votes, cementing his position as the frontrunner ahead of the November 27 poll.
His closest challenger, Tobole Kipsang Kibor Wycliffe, finished with 30,897 votes, while Daniel Kiptoo Korir came in third with 23,613 votes.
The contest attracted strong interest within UDA, with nine aspirants battling for the party flag in the by-election that follows the vacancy in the Baringo Senate seat.
The other aspirants and their tallies included Sylas Kipkogey Tochim (769), Evans Kiprotich Mundulel Bett (735), Joseph Rotich Cherutoi (172), Isaiah Kipkoros Kipkurnet (141), Linus Musa Kamket (118) and Reuben Chirchir Chepsongol (82).
Cheburet’s victory underscores UDA’s dominance in the Rift Valley region, where internal party primaries often set the tone for the final election.
The large voter turnout in the nominations highlighted both the competitiveness of the process and the high stakes of the upcoming senatorial contest.
His nomination also positions him as a key player in Baringo politics, where the party enjoys a significant grassroots presence.
With the party ticket secured, Cheburet is set to face candidates from other political formations in November, in a race that will not only decide Baringo’s representative in the Senate but also signal shifting political alignments ahead of 2027.
