Mumias East MP Peter Salasya has sparked debate after urging the Luhya community to unite and cut ties with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Speaking on Monday, September 22, 2025, through his official social media pages, Salasya told his supporters that the first step to political unity in the region is to deny ODM seats at every level.
He asked voters to reject the party’s candidates for positions ranging from Members of County Assembly (MCAs) to governors.
According to Salasya, the Luhya community has remained under the shadow of ODM for too long without tangible benefits.
He said the region must draw lessons from leaders like the late Kijana Wamalwa and Masinde Muliro, who championed unity and fought for fair representation.
“What I know is that unity is the way forward,” Salasya said.
“It is time to revive the spirit of Wamalwa and Muliro. For 20 years, we have followed Raila Odinga’s leadership, but our community has gained very little in return.”
The legislator argued that ODM has mainly served the interests of the Luo community, while the Luhyas—despite turning out in huge numbers for Raila in every election—have been sidelined when it comes to government positions and influence.
Salasya also revealed he has not yet decided his political path in 2027. He said he could run for re-election as MP, vie for the presidency, or even become a running mate.
“Even I do not know yet where I will be,” he admitted.
On April 5 this year, Salasya had already declared a “political divorce” between the Luhya community and ODM.
He reminded his followers that the region has been Raila’s loyal base for decades but has received little in return.
He pointed to counties such as Bungoma, Kakamega, Busia, Vihiga, and Trans Nzoia, as well as Luhya-dominated constituencies in Nairobi, where support for ODM is already fading. He believes this signals the beginning of a bigger political shift.
“We are not waiting for instructions anymore. We are awake, and we are ready. In 2027, the Luhya vote will not be taken for granted,” Salasya said.
