Former Senator Gloria Orwoba has called for the immediate shutdown of Emali Sunshine Academy in Kajiado County after disturbing claims of sexual abuse among pupils came to light. Her strong demand followed a viral video of a Grade 3 boy in tears describing how an older pupil sodomized him inside a dormitory.
In a post on X, Orwoba accused the school of neglect and urged Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba to take action. She insisted that all staff should record statements and that parents of the accused children present them to the police. She also said the school management must face charges in court for allowing abuse to continue.
The allegations were first made public last week when TikToker “Truth Watchdog” released a video exposing what he called rampant sodomy at the school. The eight year old victim in the clip spoke about repeated assaults, adding that teachers ignored the abuse. More parents have since reported similar incidents involving both boys and girls in the institution.
Police officers in Emali have confirmed they are looking into the matter, though no arrests have been made. Angry parents have demanded closure of the school until safety can be restored. Many blame the management for turning a blind eye despite earlier complaints about weak supervision.
Emali Sunshine Academy was started more than ten years ago with the aim of offering affordable education. The school now has more than 500 pupils. Despite its promise of holistic learning, parents say the institution has failed to protect children in hostels and classrooms.
Orwoba, who served as a nominated Senator between 2022 and 2024, has been outspoken on issues of child rights and women’s welfare. She said the case should serve as a warning to private schools across Kenya, stressing that running a school requires more than just teachers and buildings.
Her remarks have been widely shared online, gathering thousands of reactions and support from activists. The Kenya Child Rights Network has joined calls for urgent action and for new child protection policies in all learning institutions.
The Ministry of Education has not issued an official response but reports suggest an inter agency team is heading to Emali to investigate. Kenyans now wait to see if the school will be closed and if those responsible will be held accountable.
