Tragedy struck Syokimau Blessed Assurance Academy on Monday when an 11-year-old pupil drowned while swimming during a school activity, prompting police to launch a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The deceased, identified as Jael Nabalayo, was reportedly participating in a scheduled swimming session when the incident occurred. Witnesses say the young girl got into distress in the water but efforts to save her life were unsuccessful.
The school administration immediately contacted emergency responders and notified her parents.
Machakos County police officers have since opened an inquiry to establish whether there was negligence on the part of the school.
They are questioning teachers, swimming instructors, and school staff who were present at the time to determine if proper supervision and safety protocols were followed.
“We have commenced investigations to ascertain what exactly happened and whether there was adequate safety oversight. The findings will guide any further action,” said a police spokesperson, urging calm as authorities work to piece together the events that led to the tragedy.
The incident has triggered an emotional reaction among parents and the local community, with many calling for tighter safety measures in schools offering swimming lessons.
Child welfare advocates have emphasized the need for institutions to have certified lifeguards, adequate staff-to-student ratios during aquatic activities, and functional rescue equipment on-site.
The school has expressed its condolences to the family, terming the death a “deeply painful loss.” They pledged full cooperation with the ongoing investigation and promised to review their safety procedures to prevent a recurrence.
Jael’s body was taken to a local mortuary pending a post-mortem examination, which is expected to shed more light on the cause of death.
Meanwhile, grief counselors have been deployed to the school to support her classmates and teachers as they come to terms with the loss.
