Githurai Member of County Assembly (MCA), Deonysias Mwangi Waithira, has caused a stir after news broke that he was resigning from his position. Many residents and Kenyans online reacted with shock, but Mr. Mwangi has now clarified that he has not yet officially resigned from the Nairobi County Assembly.
Speaking during a radio and TV show on Nation FM and NTV, Mr. Mwangi said a draft of his resignation letter had leaked before he signed it. He explained that he had written the letter and planned to sign it on November 1, 2025, but the decision would depend on how things unfold before then.
According to Mr. Mwangi, his frustrations come from what he described as poor service delivery by Governor Johnson Sakaja’s administration. He said he has been pushing for development in Githurai but feels the county government is not committed to solving problems like bad roads.
He even pointed out that his decision has already had some positive impact, since the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) recently announced plans for public participation on the construction of Cifu Road.
In his draft resignation letter dated September 17, 2025, Mr. Mwangi accused Governor Sakaja of failing to keep promises. He said he had consulted both local clergy and residents, and they supported his decision because they know he has tried to deliver for them.
However, he also made it clear that until November, he will still remain in office and continue fighting for the people of Githurai. He also called for a meeting with residents to discuss poor infrastructure and other challenges facing the ward.
Mr. Mwangi stressed that even if the seat were declared vacant and a by-election held, he would not run again. He reminded people that he was among the first MCAs to sign the impeachment motion against Governor Sakaja.
Meanwhile, Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Kennedy Ng’ondi confirmed that he has not received any official resignation letter from Mr. Mwangi.
By law, an MCA must submit a signed resignation letter to the Speaker before the seat can be declared vacant. Only after this would the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) organize a by-election.
Githurai residents are watching closely to see if their MCA will sign the letter in November, or whether he will change his mind before then.
