The government has announced generous cash rewards for Kenyan athletes who excelled at the just-concluded World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan.
Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba on Monday confirmed that medal winners will receive monetary awards as part of the state’s recognition of their outstanding performances on the global stage.
According to the directive, gold medalists will each walk away with Ksh3 million, silver medalists will receive Ksh2 million, while bronze medalists will be awarded Ksh1 million.
Namwamba emphasized that the rewards are aimed at motivating athletes to continue flying the Kenyan flag high and to affirm the government’s commitment to supporting sports development.
“These men and women sacrifice immensely to bring pride to our country. It is only right that we celebrate their hard work in a tangible way,” the CS noted.
Kenya once again stamped its authority in distance running during the championships, finishing among the top nations in the medal standings.
Athletes who secured podium finishes in both track and field events are set to benefit from the new incentive scheme.
The announcement has been welcomed by sports stakeholders and fans alike, many of whom praised the move as long overdue.
Analysts argue that financial rewards not only boost morale but also help athletes invest in training and secure their futures beyond the track.
However, some voices have called for broader reforms, urging the government to channel more resources into grassroots talent development, better training facilities, and athlete welfare programs.
The awarding ceremony for the medalists is expected to take place upon the team’s return from Tokyo.
This recognition, observers say, underscores Kenya’s continued dominance in athletics and the government’s resolve to keep its champions motivated.
