The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched investigations into the mysterious death of Simon Warui, who allegedly died while in custody at the Central Police Station in Mombasa.
According to a police report, Warui had been arrested over an alleged theft incident in Nairobi and was being held pending transfer. However, he was later reported dead inside the cell under unclear circumstances.
Human rights organizations in Mombasa have raised concerns, demanding a swift and transparent probe into the incident. They argue that Warui’s death adds to a growing list of questionable deaths in police custody across the country.
“We want IPOA to ensure justice is served. Kenyans must be assured that police cells are safe and not death traps,” one activist said.
The case has triggered public outcry, with calls for accountability and reforms in the management of detainees. IPOA has assured the public that a full forensic and witness-based investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of death and whether there was foul play.
The incident also rekindles debate on police brutality and custodial rights, issues that have long haunted Kenya’s justice system.
