Students of Litein Boys High School in Kericho County, on Monday night, went on a rampage, destroying property of unknown value before bizarrely taking time to cook and eat meals, with one student even recording videos of the chaos on a smartphone.
The incident, which left classrooms, dormitories, and school infrastructure damaged, has sparked widespread concern among parents, teachers, and education officials over the state of discipline in schools.
Eyewitnesses and preliminary reports indicate that the riot started shortly after evening preps, allegedly triggered by grievances ranging from strict school rules to earlier complaints about being denied permission to watch a high-profile football match.
After vandalising school property, some of the students gathered in the school kitchen, lit fires, and cooked food before sitting down to eat as the unrest continued around them.
Videos circulating on social media show students shouting, breaking windows, and mocking authorities as they filmed the destruction. Education officials condemned the incident, terming it a dangerous sign of growing indiscipline among learners.
Kericho County Director of Education said a crisis meeting would be convened with the school’s Board of Management to assess the extent of the damage and recommend disciplinary action. Police have also been deployed to maintain order as investigations into the cause of the unrest continue.
Parents have expressed worry about the safety and future of their children, while community leaders have urged calm and called for dialogue between the school administration and students.
The Ministry of Education is expected to issue a formal statement in the coming days, with possible recommendations including mass suspension or closure of the school to restore normalcy.
