Deputy President Professor Kithure Kindiki is increasingly being seen as President William Ruto’s strongest pillar, with his calm leadership style winning praise from both the government and political analysts. His approach has been described as the complete opposite of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who was often linked to abrasive politics.
Last week, President Ruto publicly lauded Kindiki, saying his academic background has helped strengthen government operations. The President joked that his former deputy used to complain a lot and lacked education, while praising Kindiki as a “learned and focused” leader capable of steering state projects to success.
Observers describe Kindiki as a humble politician who avoids unnecessary political battles. Instead, he has chosen to concentrate on implementing government programs, particularly in security operations and economic reforms. Analysts credit his wisdom for shaping crucial decisions in cabinet meetings and ensuring balance between politics and development.
His experience as a constitutional lawyer has also been highlighted as a major asset. Sources close to State House reveal that Kindiki often guides the government on how to navigate legal hurdles when rolling out projects. This has given President Ruto confidence in him as a deputy who can offer both legal and political stability.
Since being sworn in as Deputy President in November last year after Gachagua’s removal, Kindiki has taken a frontline role in defending government initiatives. He now represents the President in national functions and rallies, a clear sign of the trust placed in him as succession politics for 2027 begin to heat up.
President Ruto has admitted that he needed a deputy with high academic qualifications and legal expertise to help deliver campaign promises. He praised Kindiki for bringing wisdom and clarity that he had missed in the first two years of his administration.
Kindiki has also turned his rural home in Irunduni, Tharaka Nithi, into a political hub where he receives delegations of leaders and citizens to push government agendas. He has further championed grassroots programs, especially those targeting women’s empowerment, often accompanying other leaders to promote government development projects.
Political analysts note that his calm but firm presence could be key in helping President Ruto retain votes in Eastern Mount Kenya. This region has been politically divided since the fallout between Ruto and Gachagua, but Kindiki is now viewed as the face of reconciliation and stability.
