On Monday afternoon, 22 September 2025, Maragua Member of Parliament Mary Wamaua was chased away by angry residents at Kimorori Grounds in Kenol, Murang’a County.
According to videos circulating online, the visibly agitated crowd shouted and charged toward the MP, forcing her to retreat under the protection of her security team, which included a police officer who helped guide her out of the venue.
The confrontation is reported to have stemmed from ongoing tensions over government plans to develop the Kimorori sports grounds, a space locals say is vital for youth recreation and training.
Residents, particularly the youth, have strongly opposed the proposed development, which reportedly includes an affordable housing project, subcounty headquarters, an ICT centre, and a modern court.
The Maragua NG-CDF committee had allocated Ksh24 million in 2022 for the construction of these facilities, but the plan has faced stiff resistance since its announcement.
Locals insist that the grounds should remain a sports facility, arguing that its conversion would deprive the community of one of the few public spaces available for games and social gatherings.
This is not the first time the project has faced backlash. Reports from as far back as 2022 show that youth groups in Kenol have protested twice against the plans, staging demonstrations and petitioning local leaders to seek alternative land for the government offices.
Monday’s incident reflects the growing frustration among residents who accuse their leaders of ignoring public participation and pushing through projects without adequate consultation.
Police have not reported any arrests from the confrontation, but tension remains high in the area as locals vow to resist any construction attempts. Leaders have been urged to initiate dialogue with the community to prevent further clashes and find a mutually acceptable solution.
