The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched investigations into the mysterious death of 35-year-old Simon Warui, who died while being held at Mombasa Central Police Station. His sudden death has sparked concern among the public and renewed calls for accountability within the police service.
According to a police statement, Warui was accused of stealing KSh 170,000 from his employer before fleeing. Reports suggest that he spent the money lavishly between Nairobi and Mombasa. Once the cash ran out, Warui is said to have sought help from a local Catholic church, which later handed him over to the authorities.
Shortly after his arrest, he was placed in custody at Mombasa Central, where he was later reported dead under unclear circumstances. Police have not provided detailed information on what led to his death, only confirming that investigations are ongoing.
Human rights organizations have condemned the incident, describing it as yet another case that raises questions about the treatment of suspects in police custody. “Every person, regardless of the allegations against them, deserves to be protected while under state care. We demand a transparent and urgent investigation,” one activist said.
IPOA confirmed that its officers have visited the station to collect statements, review custody records, and examine the scene. The authority assured the public that the inquiry will be independent and that findings will be made public once the probe is complete.
Warui’s family insists he was in good health at the time of arrest and is now demanding justice. The case has reignited debate on police accountability and the safety of suspects in detention facilities across the country.
