
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched an investigation into the death of Simon Warui, 26, who died at Central Police Station in Mombasa.
According to the police, the deceased stole money from his boss in Nairobi, he fled to Mombasa where he went and spent all the money before he started roaming around a Catholic Church in Mombasa asking for food.
A Nun gave him food after which he was handed over to the detectives from the directorate of criminal investigations who took him to Central Police Station in Mombasa, where he was held. The Nun claimed that the deceased appeared to be disoriented, not in his right mind when they met.
By this time, his family was already searching for him after he went missing from his Umoja home in Nairobi. They were called and informed that he was in custody in Mombasa. They went to Mombasa where they were informed that he allegedly died while trying to escape from police custody.
Detectives from the directorate of criminal investigations took them to a bloody room where Warui allegedly died in. His Death caught the attention of Kenyans who took to their different social media platforms to call for more investigation.
A Police Constable who filed a postmortem request said that the deceased was found lying in a washroom with blood oozing from his nose.
A postmortem revealed that Warui died of cardiorespiratory collapse caused by a neck fracture and dislocation, consistent from a fall from a height.
