Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has congratulated Malawi’s President-elect Prof. Peter Mutharika on his election victory, describing the outcome as a defining moment not only for Malawi but for the African continent.
In a statement shared on X, Gachagua said Mutharika’s triumph represented a historic declaration that Africans were increasingly rejecting dictatorship, corruption, and manipulation in favor of democratic accountability.
He argued that the Malawian vote was a continental reminder that the ballot remains the most powerful instrument of change.
“This election was more than a national triumph for the Republic of Malawi; it is a continental statement. The people of Malawi have demonstrated that Africa is no longer a playground for conmanship, religious hypocrisy, and state capture,” Gachagua wrote.
He praised outgoing President Lazarus Chakwera for conceding defeat and personally congratulating Mutharika, saying the gesture underscored respect for democracy and the supremacy of the people’s will.
Gachagua used the Malawian election to send a pointed message back home, drawing comparisons with Kenya as the country heads toward the 2027 General Election.
He urged Kenyans to emulate Malawi’s courage by rejecting fear, propaganda, and tribal manipulation, insisting that citizens hold the ultimate power to reclaim their future.
“Kenya is equally watching ahead of 2027. Just like our Malawian brothers and sisters, we must reject hopelessness and exercise our sovereign power through democratic means,” he added.
The former Deputy President invoked Africa’s turbulent past, recalling the downfall of leaders such as Idi Amin, Mobutu Sese Seko, Jean-Bédel Bokassa, and Robert Mugabe, noting that their strongman politics eventually collapsed under the weight of popular resistance.
“Malawi has reminded us that African citizens are awake. They see, they feel, they act,” Gachagua said.
