Faith Kavaya, a Nairobi resident, is seeking justice following the mysterious death of her mother, Zaituni Kavaya, a 54-year-old domestic worker. Zaituni died at her employer’s house in Kilimani, Nairobi, under circumstances that have left the family devastated and suspicious.
The incident occurred earlier this week and has sparked a police investigation, with five Sudanese nationals currently in custody at Kilimani Police Station.
Faith tearfully narrated that her mother had been called back to work after her shift ended, only for the family to later receive a call from police informing them that Zaituni had died.
According to statements from the employer’s legal counsel, the tragedy allegedly followed accusations that Zaituni had stolen money found in a pair of trousers belonging to the employer’s son.
It is claimed that she attempted to flee and fell from a balcony. However, an autopsy revealed that she had sustained multiple injuries consistent with blunt force trauma, contradicting the initial account and raising suspicions of foul play.
Faith described her mother as healthy and in good spirits when she left for work that day, making her sudden death all the more shocking. She expressed her family’s anguish, saying they were determined to get answers and ensure that those responsible were held accountable.
The case has drawn attention to the treatment of domestic workers in Kenya and the vulnerability many face while in employment. Human rights advocates have joined the family in calling for a thorough and transparent investigation to establish the truth.
Police have confirmed that investigations are ongoing, and the suspects will remain in custody as detectives piece together what happened on the fateful day. The family has urged authorities not to let the matter be swept under the carpet.
