A video rapidly circulating on social media showing a Member of Parliament appearing to launch a scathing attack on his party leader, Raila Odinga, has ignited a political firestorm across Kenya, stirring widespread anger and confusion. The clip has left many questioning the loyalty and unity within the opposition ranks.
The video shows Embakasi East MP Babu Owino seemingly accusing Mr Odinga of letting down his supporters and fuelling political divisions. The remarks, seemingly a rare and direct challenge to the established political figure, quickly sparked heated arguments in households, workplaces, and on digital platforms.
However, the legislator has since come forward to vehemently deny the authenticity of the clip, flagging it as a malicious and doctored piece of political propaganda. According to Owino, his political rivals deliberately manipulated the footage to create a false narrative.
The MP clarified that the video was taken from a rally in Suna East Constituency in 2024. He explained that his original comments, which were critical of President William Ruto, had been skilfully spliced and edited to make it appear as if he were attacking Mr Odinga.
In the authentic video, Owino was urging his party leader to organise further protests against the government’s policies before taking up his potential role at the African Union. He maintained that his loyalty to Mr Odinga remained intact and dismissed the controversial clip as a deliberate attempt to stir division.
Before the clarification, supporters of the MP had praised what they saw as a courageous and long-overdue move to hold a senior politician accountable, arguing that no leader should be above criticism.
Conversely, loyal followers of Raila Odinga strongly condemned the apparent remarks, viewing them as a disrespectful attempt to gain political visibility by targeting a figure central to Kenya’s fight for democracy.
They pointed to Odinga’s historical role in championing multiparty reforms and civil rights as a testament to his legacy, insisting that his contributions remain unmatched in the country’s democratic journey.
