Embakasi East MP Babu Owino dismissed claims that he is fighting Raila Odinga or ODM, saying his loyalty to the party remains firm. The MP stressed that his criticism has always been directed at the President William Ruto-led government, not at his political father or ODM. He urged ODM leaders to remain united, saying Raila’s recent remarks prove he was right about members secretly supporting Ruto.
Loyalty runs deep for Babu Owino, who says nothing will make him fight Raila Odinga or the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party. Babu Owino vowed his loyalty to Raila Odinga and the ODM party.
The Embakasi East MP stressed that even without a party ticket in future elections, his support will not waver. Speaking during an interview on Ramogi TV on Wednesday, September 24, Babu insisted his political disagreements have only been with the William Ruto-led administration and not with Raila or ODM.
“You’ve never heard me criticising ODM or speaking ill of Raila. Raila is like a father to me, and while families may have disagreements, you cannot fight your own father,” Babu said.
Babu Owino’s ODM ticket speculation There has been growing speculation that Babu is eyeing the Nairobi gubernatorial seat in 2027, with reports suggesting ODM may not back him with the party ticket. Addressing this, the MP emphasised he will never turn against Raila. “Whether ODM gives me a ticket or not, you won’t hear me stand somewhere fighting Raila. That is my respected father whom I love,” he stated.
Babu also weighed in on recent remarks by Raila Odinga, who warned ODM leaders against prematurely endorsing President William Ruto for a second term. He argued that his earlier warnings about ODM politicians cozying up to Ruto have now been confirmed.
“Raila came out the other day and called out ODM leaders who had already started supporting Ruto for a second term. That is exactly what I’ve been saying. Some of the ODM leaders are greedy. Who told them that ODM will not field a presidential candidate in 2027? It is like they are in a family but feel seeing their father is not enough, so they are rushing to look for another father,” Babu said.
The legislator said he had long seen through the intentions of certain ODM figures and was not surprised by Raila’s recent position.
What did Babu say on claims of being a betrayer? Babu further hit out at critics within ODM who branded him a traitor for refusing to side with the Kenya Kwanza government. He questioned why he was celebrated when sacrificing for the party but criticised when opportunities and positions came into play.
“When Babu was going to protests and being teargassed, he was good. When he was being arrested and locked up over baseless charges, he was good. But now, when opportunities arise and positions are being distributed, they suddenly say I’m against Raila and fighting ODM,” he wondered.
The Embakasi East MP called for unity within ODM, saying the party must remain strong to serve Kenyans effectively.
“There is no way I can oppose ODM when I am still in ODM. If I ever oppose the party, I will tender my resignation, go back to be re-elected, and return to Parliament. But as long as I am in ODM, I will not fight Raila or ODM,” Babu said.
